Time to unpack, and once you’re reunited with your personal belongings and furniture then life usually settles down to an even pace and you don’t feel so foreign anymore. For most people it’s a major occasion to have their own, familiar belongings around them again.
Telephone
When arranging for a new phone connection, you must present the passports of the people who applied for the phone in person, as the phone company will check the identities. You have a choice of providers, the most well known being TelstraClear and Telecom. In New Zealand, it can take 24 hours or less, to have the phone connected.
Power
There’s also several electricity companies and it could be a good idea to ask the neighbours who they are supporting as not all companies are star performers. If there is piped (reticulated) gas to the property and you are not going to use it make absolutely sure that you advise the company and that they should remove the pipes and meter box as you could be liable for line charges even though you are not using any gas.
Insurance
Your solicitor will check that you insure the home before you settle.
No furniture?
There are some companies that will lend you the odd sofa if you order new furniture through them. There are also companies that hire furniture on a weekly basis. Another alternative is to stay in a hotel, motel or lodge until your furniture arrives. Some of our clients moved in without our furniture and had to camp for a week. It was great fun for the children and we were just amazed at the friendliness of the neighbours, who lent them various items to use while waiting for the release of the container.
The container arrives
Don’t be surprised if the number quoted by the removal company is not the same as the one on the seal when you receive the container. In New Zealand the containers are opened by Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and fumigated for spiders and other unwelcome creepy crawlies.
