Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is the government agency that holds all the documents referring to any specific lot of land. That document is called a title. On the title are the names of owners, the land is identified and land size, the number of the document and any other relevant matters like a mortgage against the land are noted. The rights and obligations inherent to that Title may regulate your use and enjoyment of the property.
