It could be a good idea to speak to a therapist when you plan such a big move to ensure that you know how to bring the best out of your children. Even if they are usually little angels, they are going to play up, because the whole family becomes stressed and sometimes depressed without even knowing it. Maggie is speaking from experience – one of our sons was around six years old, had lived in the same house all his life and suddenly we moved halfway across the world, lived in motels and then a fully furnished house before we could move into our first home.
He didn’t know what was going on, as he had no idea what the meaning of moving to a new country really meant (neither did we!). We were so stressed, he was doing things out of character and it was difficult for him. He was for the best part of the first year constantly in trouble and looking back, we didn’t accommodate him or understand what was going on.
Our other son was a teenager and for the first year he was angry with us because he had to leave his friends behind. If I could change anything about our move, I would have been better prepared to help my children with the enormous change in their lives.
