Building methods in New Zealand are adapted to local conditions as we are in the ‘ring of fire’ (volcanoes), on a major fault line, and we have strong winds.  Double brick is not a common building method in New Zealand, as it would have little resistance in earthquakes.

Timber frame

Don’t underestimate timber frame homes. They are durable and can withstand earthquakes and land movement much better than double brick homes.   The most important thing to check with a timber frame home is the moisture content of the frame. If it is wet, fungi will flourish and destroy the integrity of the timber frame and your health will deteriorate. Ask the property check/surveyors to check specifically for this.
